Half Tour of Pendle –9m/2250’

This classic East Lancashire race over Pendle Hill was the first counter in this year’s FRA English Fell Running Championships, and as such attracted a top quality field, the race being won by Bingley’s Ian Holmes in 1.03.08 from the Pudsey & Bramley duo of John Heneghan and Rob Hope.
Congratulations to Pippa Jackson who had the performance of the day, storming home 1.17.04 to win the ladies race -her first English Championship victory, and a great start to the season. Pippa was followed by Lyn Thompson (1.32.03) who also had a great season opener finishing 2nd FV50, a great run off the back of low-volume winter training. Third ladies team counter was Jo Gillyon, 39 seconds behind in 1.32.42 to claim 6th team for the ladies -a good start to the season and not far off a medal position.
The Keswick men were represented by Steve Hebblethwaite (1.10.50), Geoff Somers (1.41.49) and John Rutter (2.11.57). John also picked up good early season points, finishing 5th V70. The next counter in the English Champs is Stretton Hills on June 6th (see http://www.merciafellrunners.org.uk/ for details), preceded by a trip to Ireland for British Champs race, Slieve Bearnagh on April 4th, and Scotland on the 2nd May for long counter, Stuc a Chroin. Those interested in these races should contact team captains, Steve Hebblethwaite and Jo Gillyon.
