A really competitive field for this race in the Howgills, with John Heneghan, Jim Davies & Morgan Donnelly taking the top three spots. First lady was Ruth Metcalfe of Eryri followed by Nicola Davies & Wendy Dodds.

Debbie Thompson was representing Keswick finishing in a time of 57:45, as was Colin Valentine who finished in 46:41 which was much faster than last year (49:54) and demonstrating Colin's good early season form.

Cartmel Ultimate Trails Race –Saturday 21st March

Dave Burton ran 1.25.30 for 25th place in this new trail race run by ‘VO2 Max Events’, organisers of the Lakeland Trails and Derwentwater Trail race. Dave has been putting in some good training of late and after such a strong run, is well placed for a good run in his target race at the Blackpool Marathon in two weeks time. The race was won by Nick Leigh of Altringham & District AC, Anna Lupton of Radcliffe AC the fastest lady.

Dentdale 14 –Saturday 14th March

Well done to Rainer Burchett flying the flag for Keswick at the Dentdale 14 last weekend, running 2.02.56 for 246th out of a field of 421, and 16th V60. Matt Barnes of Altringham & District won the race in 1.12.53, followed by team mate Nick Leigh and Wesham Road Runner, Steve Littler. Jo Waites of Calder Valley was first woman in 1.32.55.

Trimpell 20 -Sunday 15th March

There was a good turnout (493 finishers) this year for the ever popular fast and flat Trimpell 20 race in Morecambe. Advertised as "the pre-London road race", the course produced the fastest time for a 20 miler in the UK in 2006. A number of Keswick AC runners continued their training for London with a run out yesterday. Rob Wynne (2.17.35) made 79th and 17th o/45 and Keith Harrison ran a time of 2.20.56 for 105th and 20th o/45.
Julie Yeates (2.27.04) had a great run to win 1st o/45 and record the 18th fastest time for the women -well done, and Hayley Hodgeson (2.35.47) who claimed 8th o/40, along with Anne Downie (2.42.07) for 5th o/45, should be well pleased with their excellent preparations for London on 26th April.
It's great to see members of the club continuing the good start to the road season this year.

Little Strickland 10 -Sunday 8th March

Two Keswick AC members seized the opportunity for a run at this race nr Penrith last Sunday. Well done to Debbie Edgington (1.23.44) in 53rd, and Kim Clark (1.25.49) in 57th. The race was won in a time 0f 1.04.00 by Hayden Davies of Howgill Harriers.

Kielder Borderer -17m/3000'

Run scince 1986, the Kielder Borderer race has never attracted more than 50 runners. The entry in the FRA calendar for the race stipulates, "Experience/confidence in bleak remote country and navigational skills essential". Wind, sleet, snow and hail was braved by 45 runners yesterday in particularly boggy conditions, for a memorable day on the hills and by Chris Edis (18th) in 3.46.18.

Inter Counties X Country –Nottingham

Congratulations to Rosie Stuart representing Cumbria in Nottingham on Saturday in this prestigious event, which as well as playing host to the Inter Counties Championships, acts as the World Cross Country trials. In the U20 women’s race, one of the day’s most competitive fields, the final climb saw five athletes vying for the three automatic World Cross Country spots for team GB.
The race was won by Lilly Partridge, with European Cross Country silver medallist Charlotte Purdue in second. With pre-race favourite race favourite Laura Park dropping out mid race, third spot went to Kate Avery. Rosie finished in 25.53 (54th) a great run in a competitive field of athletes.

Half Tour of Pendle –9m/2250’

This classic East Lancashire race over Pendle Hill was the first counter in this year’s FRA English Fell Running Championships, and as such attracted a top quality field, the race being won by Bingley’s Ian Holmes in 1.03.08 from the Pudsey & Bramley duo of John Heneghan and Rob Hope.
Congratulations to Pippa Jackson who had the performance of the day, storming home 1.17.04 to win the ladies race -her first English Championship victory, and a great start to the season. Pippa was followed by Lyn Thompson (1.32.03) who also had a great season opener finishing 2nd FV50, a great run off the back of low-volume winter training. Third ladies team counter was Jo Gillyon, 39 seconds behind in 1.32.42 to claim 6th team for the ladies -a good start to the season and not far off a medal position.
The Keswick men were represented by Steve Hebblethwaite (1.10.50), Geoff Somers (1.41.49) and John Rutter (2.11.57). John also picked up good early season points, finishing 5th V70. The next counter in the English Champs is Stretton Hills on June 6th (see http://www.merciafellrunners.org.uk/ for details), preceded by a trip to Ireland for British Champs race, Slieve Bearnagh on April 4th, and Scotland on the 2nd May for long counter, Stuc a Chroin. Those interested in these races should contact team captains, Steve Hebblethwaite and Jo Gillyon.

Black Combe -8m/3400’

Runners in this race from Silecroft near Millom on Saturday would have been forgiven for claiming a sense of déjà vu, as conditions were remarkably similar to those experienced last year when Black Combe was the first English Championship counter of the season, a race where wet and drizzly conditions aided by strong winds on the tops were responsible for many runners going astray. Thick mist and drizzle over much of the course on Saturday provided a similar test for the 118 starters, 14 of which ‘did not finish’ with a further 6 ‘disqualified’ for missing checkpoints. Enjoying a good soaking and testing their navigational skills were Colin Valentine who clocked 1.32.03 for 15th place, Ian Davies, on the way back from a frustrating foot injury was over 3 minutes faster than last year running 1.33.31 for 22nd, and James Walker who completed the trio in 32nd (1.41.45).

Reading matter

I am currently getting Peak Performance ("the research newsletter on stamina, strength and fitness" - check it out on the interet if you want to know more). It was on offer for a few months. I have issues 270 to 273 and will get a few more before my trial period runs out. I was wondering if anyone wanted to look at them before I stick them in the recycling bin? Anyone interested?

I mentioned this to Steve H and he said it would be a good idea to have somewhere that we can use as a sort of club library - for those whose obsession runs beyond merely running. (I have a few running books I'd be happy to loan to the library if we found some way of setting one up.) What does anyone else think?

High Cup Nick -Saturday 28th Feb

This race, now in it's 3rd year, is growing in popularity attracting a field of 141 runners, and was won in a record time of 1:01:47 by Darren Kay of Horwich RMI, from last year's winner Jim Davies and Bingley's Rob Jebb.

Dave Birch ran well, running himself into 10th overall in a time of 1:08:52 taking 4 minutes off his pb for the course, from Andrew Murray who took nearly nine minutes off his 2007 time in 1:22:47 (64th) and Dave Harrison who ran 1:35:45 for 1st V60 (107th).

New Chew Category 'O' race -Sunday 1st March

Dave Troman made the trip south over the weekend to the Saddleworth Runners organised New Chew category 'O' event. Held over terrain described by the organiser as 'physically challenging, rough, exposed & featureless moorland', Dave made the most of his nav skills to complete the long score category with the 5th highest score in a time of 4:28:53, and finish 2nd V40. A great run from Dave, a sign things to come this season.

Noon Stone Fell Race -Saturday 28th Feb

Tough conditions for this notorious race over the South Pennines were no discouragement to Colin Valentine on Saturday. The Todmorden Harriers race, which climbs around Stoodley Pike has twice been an English Championships counter, the last time in 2005. Colin turned out a fine performance over the 9m/2300' course to take 2 minutes off his time from last year, finishing 3rd V45, and 20th overall out of a field of 248.

Mountain running hols

If anyone's short of ideas for a summer holiday, and can't bear the idea of missing training, take a look at this Endmoor-based outfit:

Has anyone come across this company? Or been on one of their trips?
