Cumbria XC League Race #3: Maryport -Saturday 27th November

There was a good turn out from Keswick AC members at Maryport today -well done to those. Overnight snow made for picturesque if a little chilly conditions, with going underfoot reasonably firm and ground not frozen too solid.

Photographs from the race are online here. Full results will be online in due course.

Brampton-Carlisle 10 results

There was a modest turnout from KAC at yesterday’s Brampton-Carlisle 10, but those who were there took full advantage of the excellent conditions: fine, not too cold and what wind there was from the East. James Douglas of Border Harriers backed up his victory in the DW10 with another fine win here, this time in 50:33; with Ian Harding 2nd and Ricky Lightfoot 3rd. Russell Maddams led the way for KAC, finishing a highly creditable 11th in 54:11, followed by:

• Richard Suddaby (5th V45 in 59:25 – not bad for his first race of the season!)
• Sam Ayers (5th LV40 in an outstanding 1:05:23)
• John Waite 156th in 1:07:14 – I think he said it was just a warm up for a marathon somewhere today!)
• Quentin Merritt (20th V45 in 1:07:36 – PB)
• John Dawson (27th V45 in 1:10:03)
• Patric Gilchrist (11th V60 in 1:13:43)
• Hazel Davies (10th L40 in 1:14:05 – a big PB)
• David Harrison (30th V50 in 1:14:05)
• Cath Burrows (15th LV40 in 1:19:46)
• Sarah Thompson (120th in 1:26:59)

Well done all. Full results here.

Brampton - Carlisle 10

Anyone want to share a ride to Saturday's Brampton-Carlisle 10, not to mention tales of hope & woe on the way there & back? (I do believe in the power of positive thinking, honest!) If so, give me a shout on Kes 72730. Q

Keswick AC Juniors, Monday Evening Races

Press Release:

"Town Centre Street Race, 15th November

A dry evening developed into heavy rain as 12 hardy runners turned out for some loops around the market square and the car parks. There were some pretty complicated routes in order to avoid running on the bigger roads, but no-one seemed to get lost. Runners came from a wide area, and the running club are keen to open the race to anyone who wants to join in. Entry is free. Thanks to Paul, manager of the Up and Running shop for providing prizes as well as the shop premises for registration/dry shelter!

Results: Girls Age 6-7, 1st Ella Horne; Girls 8-9, 1st Maya Cooper; Boys 8-9, 1st Alexander Nicoll, 2nd Charlie Cartmell; Boys 10-11, 1st Mark Donovan, 2nd Luis Kelk, 3rd Arron Horne; Boys 12-13, 1st Joseph Horne; Girls 14-15, 1st Clare Mooney, 2nd Emily Douglas; Boys 14-15, 1st James Hodgson, 2nd Matthew Horne.

www.keswick-ac.org.uk"

Report courtesy of Martin Sluce who is doing a grand job organising these junior events. Please spread the word about these races which are proving very enjoyable for the youngsters.

Dunnerdale & Mid Lancs

A few Keswick AC runners in action last weekend:

Dunnerdale:

Well done to Richard Unwin (52:03) and Siobhan Brewer (1:03:27) for tackling this tough but enjoyable fell race in the South-West of the county.

Full results: http://bcrunners.org.uk/races/dunnerdale/2010.

Mid Lancs Cross Country - Witton Park, Blackburn:

Both Sam Ayres and Steve Hebblethwaite followed up strong runs at Barrow with excellent races in Blackburn. On a hilly and mucky course Sam finished 16th overall (24:57) and a fantastic first L40. Steve finished fourth here (37:14) to add to his third place finish in Barrow. Great starts for both in the Mid Lancs competition.

Cumbria AA 2010 XC Championship in Fitz Park

This year the Cumbria Athletic Association County Cross-Country Championships will be held in Keswick. The fixture will be at Fitz Park on Saturday 11th December, starting with junior races at 12.00pm, and the senior race at 1.30pm.

I would encourage as many folk as possible to turn out for a run in the county champs in that it is great fun racing and a good way to build strength to take into the following season.

Medals will be awarded to the first 3 in each race and first team of three in each age category – subject to sufficient entries.

Pre-Entry is encouraged, entries on the day will be accepted at an extra charge of £2. Entry forms can be downloaded from the North of England AA website here.

Note that pre-entries close on 29th November, and that club vests MUST be worn. Also, in order to qualify for selection for the UK CAU Inter-Counties XC Championships on 5th March 2011, you must enter the Cumbria AA County Championships.

Meanwhile the Cumbria League continues with the next fixture at Maryport on Saturday 27th November, with the next Mid Lancs League action tomorrow at Blackburn.

JUNIOR RACE IN KESWICK NEXT MONDAY!

Monday will be the next in the Juniors races. Due to lack of light, we're off the fells and racing round the town square. This should make for some fast, exciting races!

Registration will be at the Up and Running shop from 5.30pm. Races start at 6.00pm.

So, if you're a junior come and run. Loads of prizes, and we're having a league over the 3 winter races for winter series cups in all categories.

If you're an adult and free on Monday, could you spare an hour to come and marshall please? Obviously, with the roads involved we'll need to be pretty careful, so as much help as possible please!

Thanks

Martin

Derwentwater 10 -Sunday 7th November

A wonderfully clear, cool and sunny day for today's Derwentwater 10 was much appreceated by all, such days having been in short supply recently. The near perfect conditions for the 51st edition of the race contrasted starkly with last year's washout. All this created a perfect setting to celebrate the hard work put in over the last 20 years by retiring race organiser Alan Ritchie this year being his last DW10.

The racing too provided drama worthy of the send off deserved by Alan as two records were broken this afternoon -onlookers witnessed a record entry of runners set off from the town's Main St this year, as well as and one of the most exceptional individual performances for some years; several times winner Rebecca Robinson, who has been in great shape after representing GB at the European Athletics Championships marathon in Barcelona this summer, set a new ladies course record of 56:23, the previous record set by Lorna Irving of Edinburgh had stood since 1986.

The Derwentwater 10 has a history of producing a fast mens race too and today was no different with a strong field of local runners, perhaps the best seen for a road race in the county this year, with fast times at the front end of the field the result, James Douglas (Border Harriers) the winner in a time of 51:56. Ken Stuart's record of 49:15 however, which has now stood for an astonishing 24 years -a testament to the kind of form Kenny was in at the time, remains unbroken for another year.

At five miles; James Douglas is chased by Morgan Donnelly (522), previous DW10 winner James Bulman (309), Ricky Lightfoot (822) and Chris Steele (389), hidden is Wesham's Steve Littler. Photo ©sportsunday

The race was also the final race in the Keswick AC club road-championship. Congratulations to deserved winner Russell Maddams (9th) who took the 2010 mens crown today, waiting until around the seven mile marker to make his move to pass defending champion Steve Hebblethwaite (10th). Congratulations also to Gillian Conroy who took the 2010 ladies championship title and will be presented with the championship trophy at the presentation dinner now scheduled for January 29th. The Keswick AC men failed to keep hold of the 'Workington Rotary Club Team Challenge Bowl' which they won at last year's race, despite a strong showing from Russell and Steve, Dave Birch, Rob Wynne and Jamie Luxmoore -the only consolation being the knowledge that we have an athletics competition of such a standard on our doorstep, which is in no small part down to the many hours of hard work put in by Alan Ritchie over the last 20 years. Well done Alan.

Derwentwater 10 is this weeked!

The 51st edition of this classic race takes place this Sunday 7th November.

In 2009 Keswick AC won the coveted 50 year-old team trophy for the first time in 14 years, after strong Border Harriers teams of the late 90's and early part of this decade made the team competition their own.

The race is the final counter in the Keswick AC club road championship this year, with the start as usual on Main St at 12.00 noon and registration down at the school. Further details/entry form here. Online entry is available at www.ukresults.net.

Alan still needs helpers for the race so if you are not running and can assist please e-mail him immediately: waritchie@btinternet.com

If you are going to the race please avoid taking a car. Parking will be difficult because of other events at the school.

Mid Lancs League Race #1: Barrow -Sat 30th Oct

The first race of the 2010/11 Mid Lancs Cross Country League took place at Barrow in Furness on Saturday. A week of heavy rain prior to the weekend had made for sodden conditions on parts of the course and a true test for all the competitors. There was a good turn out of young athletes in the junior races -104 boys, and 107 girls took part in U11, U13, U15, and U17s races. This was followed by 104 senior ladies, and 200 senior men.

Winner in the senior ladies race was Susan Samme (Lytham St Annes RRC) -ranked 4th fastest V45 in the UK over 1500m this year and 17th over 10K, she made light work of the 6K course, clocking a time of 20:10. Keswick AC ladies were represented by Sam Ayers who ran a competitive race placing 16th, and 4th FV40 in a time of 22:40.

By the beginning of the mens race at 2.30pm the course was well cut up -already having seen half a dozen races, and conditions underfoot were dire making for an enjoyable and challenging 9K of running. Border Harrier James Douglas finished first, in a time of 30:29. Steve Hebblethwaite and Ian Davies were the only two male representatives from the club -Steve was pleased with a solid run in a time of 31:01 for 3rd, while Ian having a tough time of it with an injury to the foot, soldiered round for 57th in 36:30.

Full results online here.

The remaining fixtures in the Mid Lancs League are:

Sat 13 Nov -Blackburn
Sat 27 Nov -Liverpool
Sat 22 Jan -Burnley
Sat 12 Feb -Blackpool
Sat 12 Mar -Skelmersdale

Cumbria XC League Race #2: Penrith -Sat 23rd Oct

A clash of fixtures on the opening weekend of the 2010 Cumbria XC League meant Keswick AC was unable to field full strength teams as they begun their defence of the 2009 League men's and women's titles at Cockermouth last week (16th Nov).

This was far from the case at Penrith on Saturday as the ladies (Sam Ayers, Jo Gillyon, Deb Edgington, Hayley Hodgson and Kim Clark) took maximum points in the Senior Women's race, while not to be outdone, Keswick AC's men recorded a 1-2-3 in the Senior men's race, only to be denied maximum team points by the pack system whereby two Border Harriers runners had set off with 5 minute, and 2 and a half minute advantages over the main pack.

In an exciting U13 Boys race over 3500m, Mark Donovan came out 2nd in a time of 12:11, Joseph Horne running well for 8th in 13:46, while brother Arran took a super 3rd place in the U11 Boys (1800m). Photographs are now online at www.sportsunday.co.uk

Cumbria XC League Race #2 Penrith - Sat 23 Oct

Those of us who resisted the urge to do The Screes (well done to those Keswick folk who did) were treated to 4 laps of the French Fields cross country course at Penrith. Lots of flat, fast running with some brutal short, sharp hills thrown in for good measure.

Well done to Phil and Steve at the sharp end, securing 1st and 2nd respectively I believe.

I haven't seen any results yet but a great Keswick turnout I am sure will mean we featured in the teams too.

Next race is in this series is at Maryport on 27 Nov 2010.

The Screes Fell Race - 23rd October 2010

Conditions were cracking for fell-running today with Wasdale looking resplendent as ever. A slight breeze but hardly noticeable once you got running. The last third of the race was testing enough; a boggy, stone-ridden path making for a difficult descent. But a superb race that I can't recommend enough.

Keswick folk out were Julie Carter, John Beetham, Colin Valentine and me. All well up the field with Julie 3rd lady. 57 runners in total, Carl Bell of Howgill Harriers won the men's race and Emma Clayton was first lady.

FRA Relays

Congratulations Team... looking forward to racing with you soon!

I ran my first race as a Keswick member yesterday: The Llanwyrtedd Wells Trail Half Marathon. It was a very friendly race, small (53 runners), short (11.8m rather than 13.1) but good fun. En route back from a family visit to Swansea.

Worth doing if you happen to be in Mid Wales!

Congratulations to the Keswick AC ladies who placed 3rd at the UKA Fell & Hill Relay Championships today!

The prizes for the open categories at the relays, this year in Fife, were dominated by two Scottish teams benefitting from the home advantage -in a close contest Shettleston held on for a win over Pudsey & Bramley, and HBT took the 2010 womens title ahead of fellow Scots Carnethy, and bronze medalists Keswick AC.

Full results on the SportIdent website here, leg splits and hill checkpoint splits here.

Well done to all involved today -Keswick AC Ladies, Open Men and Veteran Men. Done us proud. Full report to follow in the next edition of the Pacemaker.

The 2010-11 Cumbria XC League kicked off today over the challenging course at Cockermouth, hosed by Derwent AC. Despite the national 6-stage road relays at Sutton Park today, and FRA's in the Lomonds of Fife tommorrow, the race was contested by a strong field of Cumbrian club runners.

John Nicoll of Keswick AC took up the early pace in the senior race before Ricky Lightfoot of Ellenborough AC, tipped as the pre race favourite, stamped his mark on the fixture with a powerful display at the front. Setting up chase were Phil Winskill (Keswick AC) and Russell Maddams (Kesiwck AC) fresh from a 2:31:53 at the Loch Ness Marathon. An effort from Maddams on the final lap saw him catch and overtake Winskill but he had done too much and Phil was able to ease ahead at the finish for 2nd.

Further back John Nicoll fought well after his earlier exertions at the head of the race which must have taken a lot from his legs and John Beetham completed the strong Keswick team.

2009 Cumbria League runner up Karen Bridge was setting the pace at the front of the wommens race. Last season's champion Pippa Maddams on relay duty this weekend, watched from the sidelines as Debbie Edgington and Amanda Dexter aquitted themselves well in Keswick AC colours over the tough course which varied from firm to very soft in places given the dry start to the month. Thanks go to Derwent AC for their hospitality.

The next fixture in the Cumbria League is next weekend at Penrith -Saturday 23rd October, and the Mid-Lancs league kicks off the following week -Saturday 30th at Barrow.

Go Zone Racing

OK, I'll admit it, I should be working. But what the heck? Anyway, I have come across a new concept called Go Zone Racing. It is claimed to provide an approach that helps you beat your PB. (Yes, I know, "train harder, lose a stone, then run faster" works too!). You can read all about it here. I am planning to give it a go in the Lancaster 5k on Saturday. If my face looks like this :( when you see me at training on Tuesday, you'll know what happened!

Club Fell-Championship race #4: Dale Head, 4.5m/2210' -Sun. 19th September

Rick Cooper at Dale Head -final race in the Keswick AC Club Fell-Championship 2010

It was a damp afternoon at the Borrowdale Shepherds Meet and Show yesterday, making for testing conditions for the final race in the 2010 Keswick AC club championship.

There was some close racing across the age categories. With a number of absentees -Pippa Maddams and Steve Hebblethwaite sealing the top spots in their respective categories last month at Borrowdale, and also several of the ladies whoare in preparation for an attempt at team gold in the British Championship next weekend in South Wales, the door was left open for some good competition for medal positions, and for age category medals too.

Well done to Dave Birch who was first placed Keswick AC runner home in 4th to take 2nd in the 2010 Fell Championship -congratulations Dave. Though it was far from easy run as he was chased home hard by John Nicoll second club counter, and a trio of the club's runners in a close fought battle for V40 honours -Craig Smith, Dave Prosser, and Mark Denham Smith taking it to the wire.

Craig Smith descends beneath the quarries in yesterday's Dale Head race. Photograph copyright © 2010 Darian Bridge

Well done also to Kim Clark, and to Jim Downie who both featured in the prizes yesterday finishing FV50 and MV60 respectively, and in particular Jim who sealed this year's V60 Club Championship in convincing style, with of a clean sweep of category victories in the year -placing 1st MV60 at the Causey Pike, Skiddaw and Dale Head races.

Full results to follow when they're available. Some good photographs as ever by Darian Bridge here.

Shelf Moor 05 Sept 2010

The last English Championship counter, a short sprint in the Peak District... 8 Keswick ladies and 4 Keswick men made the journey to Glossop for the 5.9mile/1500ft race to fly the Keswick AC flag.

And what a day it was. Perfect conditions (dry and breezy(!)). The ladies set off first at 11.15am followed by the mens race at 12pm.

To summarize Steve Heb slaughtered the opposition to post 8th, his best ever performance in such a competitive field. Ian Davies also had a cracking run with his best ever English ranking to date. Chris Clarke & Q Merritt (on his maiden championship voyage with an impressive knee injury sustained on the descent) both stormed home to the cheers of the over excited Keswick AC Ladies (relieved their race was over).

Cat Evans also posted a superb 15th position, with Helen Winskill chasing close behind in 16th. Julie Carter claimed 18th, followed closely by Holly Williamson, Jo Gillyon, Sarah Bailey, Kim Clarke and Siobhan Brewer. Well done to all the girls and a massive thank you for such a great turn out. Provisional results here http://www.glossopdale.org.uk/races/racessm.html
Top 3 Results:
1st Rob Hope (P&B)
2nd Lloyd Taggert (Dark Peak)
3rd Simon Bailey (Mercia)

1st Lauren Jeska (Todmorden)
2nd Helen Fines (Calder Valley)
3rd Jackie Lee (Eryri)

Fast race at Lancaster 5K series -Saturday 28th August

The 4th race in the 2010 Lancaster 5K series took place yesterday evening. Starting and finishing on the athletics track at the Salt Ayre Leisure Centre in Lancaster, the race which follows a fast, traffic free, out and back course on the banks of the River Lune attracted a total of seventy one runners, three of which who made the journey down the M6 from Keswick.

Despite a blustery evening, the race which often attracts some faster front runners provided a good platform for some close racing, and fast times. Russell Maddams ran a well calculated race -hitting the front just before the two mile marker, he pressed on from there and was justly rewarded with his first Lancaster win, in a season's best of 15:34. Steve Hebblethwaite worked through with Maddams and former Cumberland AC athlete Ian Quinn to catch the leading group just before the turn point -Quinn, now of Barrow and Furness Stiders finished strongly for 2nd in 15:35, ahead of Willy Smith (15:36) and Border Harrier, George Thompson (15:37). Steve following in 5th was rewarded with a season's best and PB of 15:42, while not to be out-done Ian Davies who has shown some dedication to make great improvements over the 10K distance this year, took 18 seconds from his own 5K PB with a brave run stopping the clock at 16:30 for 8th.

There is one race remaining in the 2010 series, on September 25th, details here.

Full results from Lancaster here.

Club road-rankings have been updated here.

Ulverston 10k

It was a warm, mostly sunny evening - ideal for fast running on a flattish course. Two KAC members made the longish trip south for the race: Phil Winskill and Quentin Merritt. We had planned to run the first 5 miles together and then blast it from there. But Phil forgot his side of the bargain and went off fast from the start. He was at or near the front for most of the way, and was rewarded with 2nd place and an excellent PB; dipping under 33 mins for the first time (32:57). The race was won by Steve Littler of Wesham RR in 32:34, with Iain Quinn of Barrow & Furness Striders 3rd in 33:03. Joanne Taylor won the women's race in 39:14, while Quentin showed some signs of a return to form after a difficult summer with a time of 41:26 for 51st place. There were 189 finishers.

The full results aren't out yet but should appear here in due course.

Ian Hodgson Relay Recce

First recce of leg 1 planned for this coming Sunday (22nd August 2010). The route is basically from Cow Bridge to Kirkstone via Dove Crag and Red Screes (5.3miles / 3000ft ascent).

Confirmed meeting time is now 3pm at the car park opposite the Kirkstone Inn (this is subject to change depending on who can make it). Please contact me if you want to come along (jogillyon@yahoo.com), don't just turn up as if there is no interest I won't be there! I am only vaguely familiar with leg 1 so it would be great if someone who knows it well is free. Otherwise it will be just to have an initial look (and attempt to find a good line of descent off Red Screes).

All welcome, regardless of whether or not they are running in the relays.

Leg 3 recce happening next Thurs (26th Aug) as an alternative to planned training session. Meet 6.15pm at Patterdale School. This leg goes from Hartsop - Patterdale via Angle Tarn (4.7miles / 1300ft ascent). Pace will be easy (Round Latrigg race is the night before).

Club fell-championship race #3: Borrowdale Fell Race, 17m/6500' -Sat. 7th August

In less than ideal conditions today, the clag down and going underfoot soft after recent rain, Simon Booth recorded his 12th Borrowdale victory in a time of 2:52:42. A word here should also go to Pippa, who was only five minutes away from the 1997 record in a great 3:19:42 -a strong run given the going underfoot.

Runners gathered in the field opposite the Scafell Hotel following the race to swap tales of woe -of injuries sustained over Scafell and down the corridor route, bravely carried for the remainder of the course, or in unfortunate cases requiring retirement, and of bad lines taken in the low cloud, around Glaramara and Allen Crags, over Scafell Pike, and off Green Gable. It is perhaps worth bearing this in mind when scrutinising the results below.

Today's race was the third of four in this year's club fell-championship. Updated tables will be online soon, going into the final race at Dale Head on September 19th.

1. Simon Booth (Borrowdale FR) 2:52:42

Ellenborough 10K - 4th August 2010

It proved to be a pleasant evening for the Ellenborough 10K taking place from the Netherhall Rugby Club. A nice cool temperature was prevailing and the course was suitably sheltered to negate the worst of the blustery wind. It’s a testing loop with one particularly tough hill after the 4 mile mark. The undulating course leaves the Rugby Club and goes through the surrounding villages of Dearham and Birkby before returning to Netherhall.

Russell was suffering the after-effects of a nasty cold but still managed an excellent second place behind Ricky Lightfoot who we think set a new course record. Sue and Siobhan came away with category prizes despite Siobhan still feeling the effects of Dollar in her legs. There were no team prizes but a quick scan of the results seems to suggest we would have been close to both. And Ian was presented with a bottle of wine for being one of only two over 75s running the race.

1. Ricky Lightfoot (Ellenborough AC) – 32:26
2. Russell Maddams – (Keswick AC) – 34:25
3. Ian Davies – (Keswick AC) – 35:11

1. Phillipa Wakefield (Border Harriers) – 43:42
2. Angela Armstrong (Carlisle Tri) – 43:52
3. Alice Chittenden (Borrowdale) – 44:07

Keswick AC

2. Russell Maddams – 34:25
3. Ian Davies – 35:11
11. James Walker – 38:05

59. Siobhan Brewer – 46:27 (1st FV35)
87. Derek Harrison – 48:13
97. Annabel Holmes – 49:30
145. Ian Addison – 56:11 (3rd MV70)

British Championship round #3: Dollar 9.4m/3150' -Saturday 31st July

Five Keswick AC ladies, and five men made the trip across the border for this most enjoyable 9.4m/3150' race from the town of Dollar, in the shadow of the Ochil Hills.

Full results here. Some photographs here and here.

Changeable weather with the cloud coming and going for the early part of the afternoon led to a palpable air of excitement as the assembled field of over 270 runners warmed up in the pleasant surroundings of the town's Dollar Academy. Following a steep climb to Saddle Hill the course is for the most part very runnable on good grass over Whitewisp Hill, Tarmangie, Andrew Gannel and Kings-Seat, before a long descent over Bank Hill to the finish at the Academy.

Pippa notched up a win in fine style just a week after the her great run at last weekend's Snowdon Race. Yesterday's makes it three wins out of three races this year for 2009 English and British champion Pippa. Some bold running from the rest of the ladies -Cathrine Evans, Julie Carter, Siobhan Brewer and Kim Clark saw Keswick AC win the team (3) competition from Eryri placing them in a great position going into the final championship race at the Black Mountains in South Wales on September 25th.

Keswick AC's improving men's side was well represented yesterday too -Steve Hebblethwaite (10th) well supported by strong runs from Jamie Luxmoore (36th), Chris Edis (50th) Ian Davies (51st) and Chris Clark (232nd). It has been a couple of years since the club fielded full mens teams for the English and British and it has been great to see a few of the lads running well and getting in the mix at a couple of the races this year.

Full results here. Some photographs here and here.

The final race in the 2010 British Fellrunning Championship is South Wales' 17m/5200' Black Mountains race on 25th September. For details and entry form click here. Entry limit of 400 so pre-entry is advised. Email Steve (stevenhebblethwaite@hotmail.com) so we can sort out transport and accommodation.

Kentmere Horseshoe 11.9m/3300' Sun 25 July

A handful of us turned out to do this classic Lakeland horseshoe from the village of Kentmere. The description of the route on the Pete Bland race map claims - "12 enjoyable miles, which can be covered surprisingly quickly given that the course traverses a number of high Lakeland fells. Most of the climbing is gradual with few very steep sections. The running is almost all on short grass or decent paths, with the only rocky section of any note being the final descent to Hallow Bank". It does, however, fail to mention the long cramp inducing run in from the fell bottom to the finish. And I'm not sure all 12 miles were enjoyable, or fast and steepness is a matter of opinion....

However I did enjoy myself for the most part as did my fellow club mates (or at least Hayley did until she turned her ankle two miles from the end). Well done to all.

Race winner was Mark Roberts MV40 (Borrowdale) in 1.32.56
Ladies winner was Aly Raw LV40 (Bingley) in 1.55.24

Keswick Results:
20. C Robinson 1.47.04
25. Jamie Luxmoore 1.49.52
113. Toby Cushion 2.09.50
180. Chris Knox 2.29.23
188. Chris Clark 2.39.52

Ladies
7. Jo Gillyon 2.09.36
15. Sarah Bailey 2.17.24
27. Hayley Hodgson 2.31.10 (13th LV40)
28. Kim Clark 2.34.37 (1st LV50)
36. Mel Hart 2.43.16

A great race but no entries on the day allowed (however it usually doesn't close for entries until a week before).

Blisco Dash Wed 21 July 2010

Just 3 Keswick runners turned out to do this classic lakeland race in Langdale. Hardly surprising really with it being on the same evening as the Newlands Valley race, the 3rd club counter in the 2010 road championship.

65 runners in total made the journey straight up and down Pike O'Blisco from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel via Red Acre Gill. With a sneaky tarmac section to start and finish - hardly noticed at the start, feels like a half marathon at the end. The weather was superb even if conditions underfoot were a little wet after the recent downpours! Lots of ground to make up on fellow competitors if you know where you're going off the top too (I didn't but didn't end up as far wrong as some....!)

Cracking race with a unique prize giving at the end by Selwyn. Basically the further down the field you are the more beer you win! And a complete bargain at £1.00 to enter!

Holme Moss

It was the 2nd of the long English Fell Championship counters on Sunday 18 July. 4 of our hardy ladies (& 1 man) traveled to Holmfirth to toe the start line of the 17mile/4000' course on a wet and windy day. But it was well worth it (easy for me to say as I couldn't be there to brave the storms with them)!!

Julie Carter was 1st Keswick runner home and a superb effort ensured 2nd place in her category behind Aly Raw (Bingley). Julie was followed by Cat Evans (18th), Holly Williamson (19th) and Kim Clark (9th FV50). A fantastic effort by all involved secured us 3rd team placing behind Todmorden and Dark Peak. Overall we currently hold 2nd place in the English Open Team Championship with only one race left (Shelf Moor 05 Sept 2010 5.9m/1500').

A huge well done girls (and to Chris Clark the solitary Keswick AC male)!

The race was won by Karl Gray MV40 (Calder Valley) in 2.24.18 and the ladies race was won by Lauren Jeska (Todmorden Harriers) in 2.49.31

Full results on Holmfirth Harriers website.

Hadrian's Wall Challenge

Ian Boit, Mark Ruddeford and Paul Maxwell completed the 86 mile run of the Hadrian's Wall on Saturday 10th July in 23hours 16 minutes. Well done!!.

You can see pictures from the run here

You don't have to buy the book, you can just take a look and you can blow it up to full screen. I think a full report will appear in the next Pacemaker.

Road-racing round up

Catforth 10K –Nr Preston, Sunday 11th July

Just one Keswick AC runner spotted at this one; well done Rachel Slattery -92nd overall, 17th lady and 6th FV40 in 49.10.

Results here.

Pennine Lancashire 5K –Blackburn, Sunday 11th July

Given the nature of this event -EA English 5K Championship and Northen 5K Championship, there was a good chance of a fast race and so it proved, but the course and conditions denied runners the really super fast times some had hoped for.

A headwind on the return leg and a few good ‘bumps’ in the race profile though made for good racing and aquitting themselves well were Russell Maddams in a Horwich RMI vest (15:43), Steve Hebblethwaite (16:07) and Ian Davies who posted a respectable 16:48 for his first attempt at the distance. All three will be in the hunt for a fast race at the final Lancaster 5K at the end of next month -Steve allready setting a pb of 15:52 in May on this fast course, with Russell going 10 seconds faster at the June race.

Matt Barnes (Altringham & District) took the English and Northern titles with 14:11, Helen Clitheroe who had raced the 1500m in the British Grand Prix at Gateshead one day previously, taking the ladies titles with 15:45.

Full results here.

Endmoor 10K –Nr Kendal, Wednesday 14th July

Danny Parkinson of the host club Kendal AAC posted 33:34 for this undulating 10K course ahead of Wesham Road Runners Steve Littler and Charlie Pass. The first female was Michaela Dempsey also of Wesham in a time of 45:41.

Ian Davies took had a run out at this one following a day working down country, and posted a time of 37:05. We suspect it’s a pancake-flat pb course, though Ian assures us the race had a long uphill pull at the start and thunderstorms doing little to contribute to fast running.

Full results here.

Bodyfit 5K –Cockermouth, Wednesday 14th July

On the same evening, closer to home there was some success for Keswick AC at the Bodyfit 5K in Cockermouth, Steve Hebblethwaite winning the mens race -over a minute clear in 16:45, and Pippa Maddams with a comfortable victory in 6th place overall with 18:37.

Ian Addison (26:09) took the prize for 1st V75 and Kim Clark (23:07) took first FV50. Mark Denham-Smith jogged round with uncharacteristic restraint for 52nd in 23:51, with Sue Denham-Smith chasing him round for 77th place in 28:05.

A total of 127 runners dodged the showers to turn out for this race that is well worth a run next year -an enjoyable and scenic if undulating course, good atmosphere and a decent prize fund.

Full results here.

West Cumbrian Run –Cockermouth, Sunday 18th July

Over 500 runners took part in the inaugural ‘West Cumbrian Run’ organised by Big-Q Events Ltd. While turning a profit from the event the company also aims to raise £100,000 for charity, and doubtless many of the entrants are pulling on a pair of running shoes for the first time which is great.

The latest pre-race update on the West Cumbrian Run website this week read “Please note that this event is a North of England Athletics Association affiliated road race and has been accurately measured. The race distance is officially now 9.5 miles and not 10 miles as originally advertised.” A good PB course! Blengdale Runners Paul Curtis made light work of the 9.5 mile 10 miler to win in 57:16. There was success for Keswick AC in the ladies race with Sarah Bailey winning in a time of 1:11:52 –well done Sarah.

Keswick AC
1. Sarah Bailey -1:11:52
8. Siobhan Brewer -1:16:43

Club fell-championship race #2: Skiddaw, 9m/2700' -Sun. 4th July

The Skiddaw race today was a counter in the Keswick AC club fell-championship, and a great turnout of club members toed the start line in Fitz Park this morning, despite a gusting wind and heavy rain.

Photograph: Stu Stoddart/www.flickr.com

Further up on the hill the wind was even stronger and accompanied by driving rain. As the summit marshalls tried to approach the exposed top they were barely able to keep upright, crouched into the wind, and were forced to turn the runners at the gate below the summit plateau -a wise decision. These marshalls should be commended for their efforts today in what were pretty foul conditions.

There was some great competition for club-championship points right down the field and it was great to see strong Keswick AC mens and ladies teams claim the team prizes. Matthew Fraser, turning first at the top will be gutted not to have won the race, and Pippa who dominated the competition in the ladies race may be disappointed not to have run the full course in what would undoubtedly have been a fast time, though conditions today weren't particularly conducive to fast running. Well done all.

Thanks also to the other marshalls on the hill, and at those the start/finish, also the volunteers in the Keswick FC pavilion who looked after 140 dripping runners and refreshed them with tea and cakes.

IAAF Diamond League

A new circuit of elite athletics meetings known as the “IAAF Diamond League” began this year. The IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) intends the new Diamond League to enhance the worldwide appeal of athletics with fixtures outside Europe, in contrast to the Golden League of 6 meetings that it replaces, which has run annually since 1998.

The biggest stars of the sport have been engaged with centralised contracts to ensure that the best athletes take part. Athletes from 32 different athletics events compete with each event receiving the same prize money from a total fund of $416,000 per meeting.

The BBC has coverage via the 'red button' of the meeting tonight (9-11pm) at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon where amongst other events Chris Solinsky on home turf will take on a world class field that includes world leader (12:51:21) Eliud Kipchoge in the 5000m.

The remaining meetings are:

Lausanne (SUI) 08th July
Gateshead (GBR) 10th July (British Grand Prix)
Paris (FRA) 16th July
Monaco (MON) 22nd July
Stockholm (SWE) 6th August
London (GBR) 13th August (London Grand Prix -Crystal Palace)
Zurich (SUI) 19th August
Brussels (BEL) 27th August

At next weekends British Grand Prix in Gateshead Chris Thompson is expected to chase the European Championship qualifying 'A' standard of 13:20:00 in a 5000m race which is to include fellow Brits Mo Farah and Andy Vernon, as well as Kipchoge, Vincent Chepkok, Imane Merga and 2010 World Cross champion Joseph Ebuya. The meeting will be televised live on BBC2 at 4:30pm.

British Championship round #2: Sebergh 3 Peaks, 4.1m/1663' -Saturday 26th June

A very warm afternoon, 4.1m/1663' starting at the Peoples Hall above the town and traversing the three peaks of Winder (1551'), Arant Haw (1984') and Crook (1509'), before a steep descent to the finish by the hall.

The cloud cover that had been present earlier in the day had all but disappeared by the afternoon and the ladies race started at 2pm under the hot sun, followed by the men, one hour later at 3pm.

We were watching the ladies race on the climb of Winder where Pippa and Olivia Walwyn were taking up the pace at the head of the race to the extent that they had gapped the rest of the field at this point. Pip had a cracking descent and was a clear winner in the end by some margin -I didn't see the finish as between trying to warm-up and do a few strides I was seeking any shade I could find from the heat of the sun. Pippa was ably supported with good running from Julie, Holly, Jo, Hayley, and Kim.

The challenging course and conditions were coupled with a strong field contesting the men's race -the British championship now consisting of only 4 races with only one short-counter meant a stacked field and highly competitive racing. It was great to see the best of the resurgent Keswick AC mens team out for the race -myself, Chris Edis, John Nicoll experiencing a baptism of fire in his first Eng/Brit champs outing, Ian, Jamie and Chris Clark too. A good showing from the lads and tough race made for a great day, and very well done Pippa.
