Coledale Horseshoe route

Can anyone provide details of the race route for the Coledale Horseshoe? I know it goes up over Grisdale and descends via Barrow, and it must go via Crag Hill (all checkpoints?). But what about Hopegill Head and/or Sandhill? Or do you cut across the face of Sandhill to Coledale Hause, and miss them out? Any major route choices? Any other comments/advice?

Cheers

Quentin

PS Anyone want a lift from Keswick?

Start and finish in the caravan park, checkpoints are Grisedale Pike, Eel Crag (Crag Hill) and Barrow.

A map and few details here... http://chrisupson.blogspot.com/2005/06/coledale-horseshoe-race-7th-june.html

The only major route choice i suppose is that between Coledale Hause and the summit of Eel Crag -the most direct is the one favoured by most.

Also worth remembering is the contour around the lower summit of Grisedale Pike. After the summit, stick to the path until it starts to rise again and there is a trod off to the left. It's a safe path but don't look down if you don't like heights!.

No options really. Grisdale pike via tourist path - over the top of the second bump on grisdale, Coledale hause - up the side of eel crag, there is a trod in the gravel that contours up. Follow cairns round to trig point - after trig point desend to the right of the path, up the next bump keep left. Keep left to col, pick the path up that takes down to outerside/stile end. The best route to barrow is the second well trodden path, not the very bottom one. Descending Barrow - keep to the main path, over the minor bump, unless you know the dip off to the left. Pete showed me this a few years back - got mired in heather, and cost me first keswick to Dave Birch

Blame me Mark for Dave beating you!!.
I showed you that way down off Barrow as it used to be good but in recent years the bracken has got too high. That was the year of the storm and I didn't take that route.
Still say the good money is to miss the 2nd hump of Grisedale off... why go up when you don't have to?. Doubt that it makes much difference time wise.
In mist be careful to find the 'chimney' up Eel Crag, go off to the left and there lies danger.

"Why go up when you dont have to?" -The same could be said for the traverse on Sail, but you can be sure people will run both routes...I suppose it depends how you like your running.
As for the line off Barrow, i'm not telling :)

Thanks to all for your advice. I think I'll simply try to follow Jo if I can keep up with her. It's a tried and trusted method - and has only led to me getting lost ... twice!

In my defence I wasn't lost, I just wasn't where I wanted or needed to be......
