A friend sent me a link to a website which allows you to mark a route on a map (like a free online version of Anquet). Then it tells you the distance. It’s not great for off-road stuff (slightly better if you use the ‘hybrid’ map which overlays a road map on to a satellite photo) but seems to work pretty well for road routes.
