Cross Bay Half Marathon

If anybody is looking for something different to do in July the annual Cross Bay Half Marathon across Morecambe Bay takes place on Sunday 24th July. Having done this two years ago I'd recommend anybody to do it at least once. Runnersworld rated it as the country's favourite half marathon last year.

Runners leave their cars at the finish at Hest Bank near Morecambe and get taken round to Flookburgh by coach. From there it is 13.1 miles (a bit shorter when I did it and it varies) back to the finish.

The route is marked across the bay and volunteers from the Inshore Rescue on quad bikes and tracked vehicles make sure you can't get lost. The surface is not what you expect, no mud, not much loose sand, just a firm springy base a bit like an athletics track. There is 100m or so of wading in thigh deep fast flowing water in the channel then back out for the second half.

The scenery out in the middle is fantastic and if you've not been across the bay before it is a fantastic way to see it.
