Anyone going to the last Cumbria X-C Race at Sheepmount, Carlisle on Sat 3rd Jan, & want to share transport? Start time for seniors is 13:10.
Reply on this blog, or via training@keswick-ac.org.uk.
Don't know if I'm going or not yet, as the weather keeps being too good not to go up the fells.

Fell Championships 2009
Further to the below blog, with a slight amendment to the Club Championship format (3 from 4 to count) does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on the structure of the Championship?
For example, would the inclusion of a super-long encourage or dissuade members taking part?
The Lakeland Classics is a priority for some people but if one of the long races was included in the CC, would they also participate in that?

Apologies for Tonight's AGM
Could someone please pass on my apologies for tonight's AGM?
What with one thing and another (running injuries, work problems etc), we've not been able to get up from Cornwall for any club events and fell races like we intended. Thanks again to all the members who made us feel welcome when we met you at Dunc's house in the Summer for the BBQ. On the plus side, Di has now started running with our local road running club, and has entered herself for a half marathon in March, and Eve has been doing the local School's cross country series. Hopefully we'll all get to the fells soon!
Kind regards to all,
Scott, Di & Eve Talling

Eaglesfield 10m
The following was posted by Barry Johnson on the CFR website...
"The Eaglesfield 10 is probable to be run in a different format for 2009. The fell road over Fellbarrow is likely to be closed for major repair so a NEW cross country style event is currently being investigated. This will be advertised as soon as possible in our news letter and web site. The date will be Sunday January 4th. Barry Johnson."

Brampton to Carlisle Road Race 15th Nov
You can enter this race on the day. Good fast 10 miler if not too windy.
Don't know who's going to this race, but there's usually a few KAC runners. As it's a point-to-point event, car sharing with at least 2 cars is handy, as using the race buses is a pain particularly if the weather is cold or wet. Use this blog to coordinate pooling if you are interested.
Race details & link are on the Clubweb Races page
I may go, but depends on fitness etc, will make a late decision.

Dunnerdale
For those not doing the Derwentwater Ten and fancy one last fell-race for 2008:
SAT.NOV 1. DUNNERDALE (R). AS. 12.00 noon. 5m/1800' from the Blacksmiths Arms, Broughton Mills, Cumbria (GR 223905 on O.S. 96). £5 (includes food).
It's a bit of a distance from Keswick but is a beautiful fell race, nice undulating course in exquisite countryside and the food afterwards is usually excellent.

Spadeadam Half Marathon - Thurs 23rd October 08
A last minute notice, but if anyone fancies a nice half marathon, there's a couple of us intending to drive up to the above event on Thursday. It's an excellent race, as it's all in the RAF Spadeadam forest area, so no traffic. Mainly undulating forest tracks as Whinlatter (but not as steep), with a mile of road at the start & a couple at the end. Full details can be found at:
http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafspadeadam/stationfacilities/halfmarathon.cfm
e-mail me at: training@keswick-ac.org.uk if you are interested.

Pictorial History of the club
I am starting to think about updating The Pictorial History so please let me have any new photos which I can use. Hopefully I will get some myself at The Ian Hodgson Relay. If possible could team members be at the finish so that I can take group photos. Also can someone take a camera to the FRA Relay. I only do the update once a year so I wont finalise it for a while.
Some of you have asked to see it again on the big screen, the problem is when. Maybe at Latrigg?.
Please e-mail any pics to; news@keswick-ac.org.uk

2009 - any-one up to win some money?
Any-one up for a trip to europe next year to win some cash (and pay for the trip) A few years ago a few of us won 400 swiss francs at the matterhornlauf in switzerland. The prize money paid for the flights. Dark Peak won 1000 francs at the same race. See the attatched link:http://www.matterhornlauf.ch/
This one also appeals - http://www.inferno.ch/index.php?page=285 - uphill only, finishes at 3,000 meters.
The "biggies" like Sierre Zinal offer more sunstantial prize money, but attract the superstars accordingly. We are just back from the jungfrau marathon http://www.jungfrau-marathon.ch/ws/jm/en/marathon/ - this had a first prize of 10K francs.
Aside from any winnings such week-ends are good craic - and can be cheap if expenes are shares such as hire cars etc. If enough of us go it could be in the club champs.

uk:athletics membership numbers
The entry form for Derwentwater 10 asks for entrants' uk:athletics membership number. As i understand uk:athletics registration cards were to be sent out to all members. Has anyone received one yet? Can we enter the Derwentwater 10 legitimately without one?

Club champs -new format.
Agreed Dunc, worked quite well...At least everyone raced each other once or twice this year. But 3 races spreads pretty thinly over the season...What about 3 from 4 to qualify next year?

Dalehead 2008
Congratulations to all who raced Dalehead this afternoon.
My quick back of an envelope calculations suggest the Keswick AC Club Fell Championships 2008 final tables are:
Ladies:
1. P Jackson
2. L Thompson
3. T Beetham
4. J Moore
5. L Dunn
Men:
1. S Hebblethwaite
2. M Fraser
3. D Troman
4. I Davies and D Loan (tied on points)
5. D Owens
A quick glance at the road champs tables suggests a number of runners could still take top spot. See thee at the Derwentwater 10!

Northern Veterans 10 Mile Road Race
This is a good event. First it's flat, so a chance to get a good time in. Second it's all Vets, so you can test yourself against the vets in your age group in the Northwest area.
The race is an open Vets-only race, for all 5-year age cats from 35 upwards. It is also the NVAC Championships for paid up members of the Northern Vets AC. Anyone can join NVAC - see the NVAC website. NVAC puts on lots of events throughout the year that you can enter as a member.
Date: 12th October 2008. Venue: St Annes Fire Station, St Annes on Sea. (Lytham area)
There are team awards for teams of 4 runners in all of the 5-year age groups up to V55. V60 & over it's 3 to count. But must have joined NVAC by 28 Sep 08 for teams.
Closing date: 11th October 08. No late entries or on day. See entry form details here
If you fancy going down to this race reply on this blog or to training@keswick-ac.org.uk and we can arrange car share etc if enough interest.

Lingmell Dash, Sat 26th July 14:00
For those who are getting sick of races where hundreds are involved, may I recommend the Lingmell Dash in Wasdale. A low-key and relaxed event the race starts from Wasdale Head and is a simple up and down affair - 2500ft of ascent and 4.5 miles long it's a testing enough run; quite a steep climb and a bit of technical rock-hopping at the top required. Those who enjoy quick descents will like this!
A bit of a way to travel but I'm going along. If anyone fancies it and wants a lift from Keswick, I'll be looking to leave around midday. I can be contacted on iandavversdavies@yahoo.co.uk

Skiddaw Fell Race, Sunday 6th July.
Having taken part in the Skiddaw Fell Race, I would like to say thank you to all concerned.
A great race, well organised and marshalled. And all those fantastic cakes and savouries to finish us off!
Was nice to see a compulsive kit check, I`m sure that`s the way it should be.

Western Fells Challenge
Rather than the usual established challenges an idea occurred for a new one. The idea of running all the fells in Wainwrights “Western Fells” in a set time limit – say 18 hours - appeals: It has three attractions – no floundering about on Calva at midnight, it starts and finishes from our house at Ennerdale, and only one road crossing near the start makes it self sufficient, no not dependant upon drivers/pacers etc. Distance is circa 50M 15’000 ascent. Chuck in the principle that it can only be done in Winter for a bit of interest. Any takers? No support required but if any-one fancies an end-of-season jog round a few tops give us a shout.

Lake District Mountain Trial 2008
Entries for the 2008 LDMT are now open. See www.ldmta.org.uk for online entry details and postal entry form.
Maybe not quite as much pressure to race, as much as just to enjoy a run on the fells. Recommended reading is the short book -'Fifty Years Running. A history of the Mountain Trial', a few copies in Rathbones.
The inaugural race was in 1952, from the Old Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale, and took in Bowfell, Esk Pike, Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Esk Hause and Rosset Gill, won by Roland Moore(Leyland Motors) in 3hours 42minutes and 39seconds. A barrel of cider as prize for the winner was shared and appreceated, with the remainder taken home aboard the winners motorbike!
A glance at the fastest times for trials over the years reveals some familiar names, J. Naylor. W Bland, D.G.Overton, C.Valentine, but never a Keswick AC winner -Maybe this year.
P.S. -if anyone has any inside infomation on the venue this year, let me know if you could use a free pair of walshes, or notes in an an unmarked brown envelope.

Blancathra +Club Fell Championship
For the benefit of those unaware, this years Keswick AC fell championship is structured such that your best TWO races, from THREE in total, determine the end of season championship table...This was decided at the club AGM.
Therefore with the SECOND race next week, Blencathra (june 4th) anyone who was unable to race at Sailbeck can still qualify for the champs, or indeed win the champs, and vet categories.
The remaining races...Blencathra, june 4th 7pm, 8m/2700'
...Dale Head, sept 21st 2pm 4.5m/2210'
Championship tables will be posted following Blencathra as usual for you to see how many points adrift of your clubmates you stand, or how slender your lead!

Blencathra - Wednesday 4th June
With Blencathra only a couple of weeks away is anyone planning to do a recce?. There are several good route choices plus a couple of easy places to get lost in mist. I am willing to take anyone round but it may be an overnight stay with the way I am at the moment!. As the club championship could well be decided at the race those in contention should make the effort to go round at least once beforehand.

Anniversary Waltz split times
For the attention of the interested, or bored, amongst you -the splits (for each checkpoint) have been posted at anniversarywaltz.co.uk
A chance to see where you fell to pieces, or posted faster times than your adversaries. Not that i'm trying to point anything out about the Catbells descent or anything.

Anniversary Waltz 2008
As per Pete's email, results of the race can be found at:
http://www.anniversarywaltz.co.uk/?p=90
Now all we need is a willing individual to write a race report for the Reminder. Perhaps one of the racing snakes at the sharp end of the field could describe the action as it unfolded? Should anyone feel particularly eager then please email it to me (iandavversdavies@yahoo.co.uk).
You wouldn't want a moody Press Officer now would you?

Middlefell Fell Race 2008
No exact times as yet I'm afraid but the following is pretty accurate (I think).
Matt Fraser had an absolute storming run and came in 6th. Chris Edis also ran well and only missed out on a top-ten finish because of the two-mile flat run-in; Chris finally finished in 11th. Lou Roberts (20th) and Richard Unwin (27th) raced well off the back of Loughrigg in midweek. Lou was second lady (for the second time this week) and was only beaten by Natalie White. I think we were beaten to the team prize by Ellenborough (would have been closer if I could have managed better then 15th)!
Apologies if I have missed anyone out or any of the above is incorrect. There should be a more detailed report in the Reminder next week.

Scottish Islands Race
A friend of mine is competing in this years race ( weekend 16 May ) and requires two experienced runners. This is a tough event with long runs on the islands of Mull, Jura and Arran. Good navigational skills and stamina are essential. More details on the event website www.sipr.zetnet.co.uk.

Club social events
As you may already know, next year's Annual Presentation Evening is already booked at the Castlehead House Hotel for Saturday 10th January and Richard Askwith has kindly agreed to be the guest of honour. We are also intending turning the Latrigg Race (Wednesday 14th May) into a social event, introducing Junior races, refreshments etc.
On an earlier Blog someone requested more social events, and dancing was mentioned (can runners dance?). We were thinking of putting on an inter-club relay this Summer followed by a get together but are struggleing for a free weekend. Maybe we should cut out the running bit and just have fun!!.
Any suggestions?.
Pete.

'Old Crown round' of Northern Fells
I'm going to have a day on the Northern Fells. Has anyone done this round?
I understand that the only requirement (besides visiting the four summits) is that you visit the Old Crown afterwards to log your time in the book -excuse to visit said pub is inspiration enough for me.
What are the summits? Skiddaw, Blencathra, Carrock Fell? Great Cockup? And what are the recognised start/finish points.

Trail shoes advice
I knew it - let the podriatrist lose with his camera and in a jiffy I pronate. So now I need orthotics and (mild) anti-pronation running shoes. I've got the former, and a new pair of road shoes (NB 857s). Next I need some anti-pronation trail shoes. John mentions the Montrail shoes on this site. And I see on the internet that the Asics Gel Trabuco X WR and the Brooks Trail Addiction seem to fit the bill. Any advice/recommendations, anyone? (I've still got my Inov8 Mudclaws for the fells, but I don't think they have enough cushioning for the mixed road/trail runs around Keswick.) Cheers. Quentin

Another Black Combe Recce
I'm hoping to have another run round the Black Combe race route this Sunday if anyone is up for a run. I cant get away from work until 12 but I hope to be there by 1:30. I can give some lifts if anyone can get to Buttermere for 12.
Inov-8 High Cup Nick 2008
Provisional results can now be found at the NFR website (http://www.northumberlandfellrunners.co.uk/html/raceresults/2008/HighCupNick-08-results.txt) along with some photos from the race.
Well done to all Keswick runners for daring the "interesting" conditions on top of the Nick but special mention for Carol, Trudy and Debbie who secured the ladies team prize.

Munro Bagging - fell running with an ice axe
Interesting week-end just gone - ice climbing in fell shoes on saturday, white outs on Beinn Dearg near Blair Atholl on Sunday and getting (nearly) swept away by the river at the back of the kingshouse when camping sat night.....
any-one out there interested in sharing a ride/fuel etc on the next one? nothing left East of the A9 or North of the Ullapool road so will be West/North west Highlands.

Blake's Heaven
Further to Trudy's blog entry below, results for the above race can now be found at http://www.c-f-r.org.uk/blakeresults_08.htm. It was fantastic to see a great turn out once again from Keswick and some excellent performances were put in. Keep your eyes open for a more comprehensive report in the Reminder later next week.
And for those who chose to forego the social run today, I'm afraid to report that you really missed out. A lovely morning run was capped off with an excellent lunch courtesy of Nick and Ann Lawler; the poached eggs were to die for! A big thank-you for your kind hospitality.

I am currently studying and traning to become a remedial massage therapist. In the near future I will be looking for volunteers for me to treat in order to build up a portfolio of case studies. For me I gain experience in examination, diagnosis and treatment of musclo-skeletal complaints, for the volunteers they get free treatment (which would normally cost around £25-30 per hour!!!). Please let me know if you would be interested in helping me build my new career! I obviously have a personal interest in sports related injuries but I am also happy to treat other problems such as repetitive strains, digestion problems, poor circulation.....the list is endless really.
Quentin, I have added a comment to your blog regarding your current complaint.
thanks John.

Blake's Heaven and John and Trudy's run
Well I'm now full of cold after my first fell race of the year! Typical! What a fantastic course and a good show from Keswick AC with Pippa showing us girls how to do it in fine style! Well done lady! Lets hope for a great year ahead for everyone.
After much deliberation, John and I thought the best way to celebrate our wedding with you all would, of course, be a run. It's now on the club calendar for Sunday 23rd March. Hope you can all make it and come for a social in the Scafell afterwards.
Hooray for fell running!

Podiatry, anyone?
Having tried physio and massage to cure my persistent / recurrent calf strain (soleus, not gastrocnemius, according to my physio), I am now thinking of going to see Andrew Stanley (podiatrist) at the Rebound Clinic in Settle. I have resisted this so far because I am reluctant to become dependent on orthotics. But I'm now pretty desperate. Has anyone any experience of this? If so, did it work? Any other thoughts? Thanks. Black Combe
Anyone interested in Black Combe needs to get organised NOW. Check out www.bcrunners.org.uk; they think the race will be fully subscribed by the 20th January. We have 14 Keswick runners already on the list but the more the merrier! We went round the route a couple of weeks ago and apart from a "tiny" climb at the end it's a beautiful course.
