Moel Eilio
I recce'd this route last week & now have details if anyone is interested. Have also got first refusal on accommodation. Get in touch!
Cottage booked in Llanberis with up to 8 bed spaces & then floor space. First to book will secure the beds! £3-5 per night for warmth, fully equipped kitchen & a bathroom. Angela
Angela Put me down for a double ensuite or next best thing for an elderly couple! Is it Friday & Sat?. we are ok for both. Just need some route advise now.
If I was fit enough I'd love to. Its a wonderful race and I think it may be reverting to the start that Joan Glass originally used. Is that right Angela? Should still have my map somewhere ........ crawls off to rummage through filing (ha ha) system.
This is off Eryri website. Ras Moel Eilio Race 2008 8 miles / 3000 ft. Category AM Registration is at the Llanberis Community Centre, the same location as the Snowdon Race start. Registration will open at 10.00 am. Entry fee is £4 and is on the day only. Cars must be parked in the village and not at the start or finish of the race. There are plenty of pay and display car parks close to the community centre, Traffic Wardens here are keen so beware! The race start this year is different to that used in recent years and will be from Bron Eryri, GR 575600. The rest of the course is exactly the same. The 2008 route is the same course that was used when the race record was set in 1993 by Mark Croasdale. The start will be at 13.00 prompt. The route is partially marked, in poor visibility local knowledge will be an advantage. The race is run on OS map 115, runners must visit the following checkpoints: 1. Start GR 575600 2. Gate GR 563598 3. Moel Eilio Summit GR 556577 4. Foel Gron Summit GR 564566 5. Foel Goch Summit GR 571563 6. Valley Head GR 573559 7. Moel Cynghorion Summit GR 586564 8. Footpath GR 578572 9. Finish (Llanberis Youth Hostel) GR 574597
There's a good obvious path all the way to checkpoint 7. Virtually due north off top (aim for Llyn Padaarn) & then curl left to cross stream just south of checkpoint 8. Obvious track from 8 to 9; recently had lots of stones set on it so expect some falls! Angela
when I did it when it was a counter in 2003 we tended too far to the right on the ridge run along the top - hit a fence which we followed but it did minimal harm
Brings back memories - the halcyon days of racing....
