Dunnerdale

For those not doing the Derwentwater Ten and fancy one last fell-race for 2008:

SAT.NOV 1. DUNNERDALE (R). AS. 12.00 noon. 5m/1800' from the Blacksmiths Arms, Broughton Mills, Cumbria (GR 223905 on O.S. 96). £5 (includes food).

It's a bit of a distance from Keswick but is a beautiful fell race, nice undulating course in exquisite countryside and the food afterwards is usually excellent.

Prob no Dunnerdale for me this year -will be Derwentwater 10 if i'm fit enough for anything this weekend.

"Last fell-race of 2008"...what about KIRKBY MOOR? 6.5m/1600' SAT NOV 22 from Beckside Village Hall, Kirkby in Furness, Cumbria...remember last year Ian?

-Anyone who tries this excellent race is advised to be aware of their bearing off CP5 (www.bcrunners.org.uk/kirkbymoormap.htm) which allmost requires doubling back on yourself -the topography and indestinct, heathery moorland make it pretty easy to loose some time and positions by running off the wrong side of the hill...having said that, anyone is also advised that if Ian is running he probably wont overtake you if you do this anyway :)

Simply a training race young Steven, a training race.

Sadly, I think Kirkbymoor clashes with the Cross-Country this year so that will take precedence. Although you wouldn't know about the Cross Country as you seem to be putting your feet up for some reason after your fell success :)

A further tip if anyone does do Kirkbymoor; from CP5 to CP6 don't go over Crag Height and Out Park. Take the lower path that skirts these small hills. I learnt the hard way as Colin Valentine magically appeared ahead of me at the end last year!!!

Are next years club champs being considered yet - if so - any clues?

It will be the new committee who decides on the championship races for 2009. With Borrowdale clashing with Y Garn I guess that the long counter will be either Wasdale or Langdale .... but I could be wrong!!.

Ian, reading the details of the cumbria x-country league, if my eyes dont decieve me; the league is to be "determined on the best of 3 races" -and there appear to be...three races left. Me and my new and improved right knee look forward to lining up at the start with you on the 22nd.

that's fighting talk .... and hopefully the team prize

It'll be good to see you back in action - those cheeky Ellenborough lads had the audacity to come away with the team prize at Penrith last Saturday.

With regards to the above I'm getting a lot of positive feedback on the following proposal - Best two from three for the fell championship:

Nine Standards
Moel Elio
Round Latrigg

The idea of a club run-off sounded good. How about the Blencathra/Skiddaw/Gt Cock up/Carrock Fell route - followed by a swift half! Something with a bit of length to stride out rather than this short and sweet stuff.

Maybe we should start a new blog on this subject. However as it will probably be after Xmas before we decide which races will count, it is a bit soon. We cannot do anything until The FRA Calendar appears for obvious reasons. Race are usually local ones chosen to attract a good turn out. Also we aim to avoid clashes with championship races and other events as well as spreading them throughout the year. It is not as easy as it seems!!.
