A clash of fixtures on the opening weekend of the 2010 Cumbria XC League meant Keswick AC was unable to field full strength teams as they begun their defence of the 2009 League men's and women's titles at Cockermouth last week (16th Nov).
This was far from the case at Penrith on Saturday as the ladies (Sam Ayers, Jo Gillyon, Deb Edgington, Hayley Hodgson and Kim Clark) took maximum points in the Senior Women's race, while not to be outdone, Keswick AC's men recorded a 1-2-3 in the Senior men's race, only to be denied maximum team points by the pack system whereby two Border Harriers runners had set off with 5 minute, and 2 and a half minute advantages over the main pack.
In an exciting U13 Boys race over 3500m, Mark Donovan came out 2nd in a time of 12:11, Joseph Horne running well for 8th in 13:46, while brother Arran took a super 3rd place in the U11 Boys (1800m). Photographs are now online at www.sportsunday.co.uk

Much as I hate to admit it, Noel has made a mistake. My time should be 33:34, not 32:34. Sam (and Dave Burton) were both ahead of me. :(
So Border win because of the handicap system. They have a runner who is faster than me but allowed to start in the 'slow' group, thereby being one of the early finishers and getting a low score. If the scores are re-calculated based on net times (instead of gross times), we win with 17 points (even allowing for the fact that Phil doesn't count because he is a Dark Peak alien!), while Border's score goes up to 36 points. Now I see how Pippa didn't win last year. She was simply much too fast for her own good. Pippa - kick back, have more cakes and ale!
Winskill was incorrectly listed as n/c for the team competition at Cockermouth -following scrutiny Noel Hakeman (Cumbria League organiser) reversed this decision (as ammended results now show). Phil was also accepted as a team counter for Keswick AC on Saturday at Penrith.
The results were subject to scrutiny after it became apparent that Dark Peak affiliate to England Athletics for fell-running ONLY. Phil is therefore able to represent his other club, Keswick AC, first claim on the roads, track & field and XC.
The pack system has its merits, but it's odd that results are not re-calculated to reflect net times to determine individual and team positions for the League.
If we can count Phil (excellent news), then we should get 13 points, and thus win - even with the perverse 'pack system'!
