Bodyfit 5K -Keswick AC Club Championship 2011
Below are the results from Wednesday's Bodyfit 5K. The race was number four of the six-race Keswick AC Club Road Championship 2011, and would also carry further status as the individual distance championship race for 5K.
A strong run for second place in the mens race sees Phil Winskill in a strong position in the 2011 Championship, adding his points here to those he secured finishing first KAC runner at the Keswick Half Marathon, and a second place at the Lambfoot Loop 10K back in May. However Russell Maddams should not be ruled out from retaining the trophy he won last season. He has two wins from his outings in this year's competition -at the Lancster Bridges 10K and the Lambfoot Loop 10K. The championship could well go down to the wire in an exciting climax in the Brampton to Carlisle later in the season.
Making her debut in the competition Trudy Beetham looked impressive crossing the line in 8th to claim the individual distance champs over 5K which must be her consolation, for with four races required to count for the overall Championship Beetham cannot feature this season. The title looks to be between Libbie Graham who took maximum points at the Lambfoot Loop, Sue Wilkinson and Annabel Holmes who were locked in a close battle on Wednesday night with only eight seconds separating the pair at the finish.
The two remaining races in the Road Championship come in the form of the Lancaster 5K on Saturday 27th August and the notoriously fast Brampton-Carlisle 10 on Sun 20th November, while the Club Fell Championship continues on Wednesday this week with the Blisco Dash in Langdale, and then races at the Loweswater Show (Sept 4th), and Three Shires (Sept 17th).

Tebay -8m/3000', Wednesday 15th June
Just over 100 runners had the pleasure of running this challenging mid-week race on Wednesday night. Although the race has an advertised 8 miles of running and 3000' of ascent, several GPS watches recorded over 9 miles for the course, which visits checkpoints at Rispa Pike, Uldale Head, Linghaw, and Blease Fell.
The race was the third in the 2011 Keswick AC Club Fell Championship. There were some closely fought battles in the men's competition, with Phil Winskill in the second race of his Championship campaign posing the biggest threat to the advantage held by Steve Hebblethwaite going into the race, but it was Steve who came out on top after getting involved for much of the race in a chase of the eventual race winner Rob Jebb (Bingley Harriers), that turned into a battle for 2nd place on the long descent from Blease Fell summit. This eventually went to Carl Bell (Howgill Harriers) who had the strength on the night to run clear of Borrowdale's Jim Davies who took the 3rd podium spot, with Steve around a minute later in 1:16:03. Jamie Luxmoore (1:22:14) showed a promising return to form after a poor run at Duddon only the week before to take 3rd in the senior men's championship from John Nicoll (1:26:08) in 4th. Indeed there were some promising runs from several of the emerging crop of runners at the club with Josh Hebson in only his second fell race only around a minute in arrears of John, while Lee Newton who is rapidly improving ran another strong race here.
After just under an hour and a half of racing Andrew Slattery (1:29:04) took maximum points in the V40 competition from Craig Smith (1:29:48) by a margin of less than a minute. In the V50 competition Quentin Merritt handed Peter Bailey a more comfortable ten minute defeat and in doing so reversed the V50 result of last month's Dockray-Hartside, while Dunc Overton had the better of Chris Clark in the V60 category.
With Pippa Maddams away on international duty at the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in Slovenia this weekend, the door was open in the Ladies Championship. Cathrine Evans (1:40:56) who is on a great season this year ran a fine race to take 2nd overall on the night behind Amblesdide AC's Hazel Robnson who recorded a winning time of 1:38:17. But it was Lyn Thompson (1:46:38), making her debut in the 2011 Championship who had the run of the night in the ladies race to beat Rachel Slattery who was 1st V40 in 1:50:28.
The remaining races in the six-race Championship are Blisco Dash (20th July), Loweswater Show (4th September), and Three Shires (17th September).

Keswick Half Marathon -Sunday 1st May
A big turnout from Keswick AC for the second race of the 2011 Club Road Championship -well done to all 28 including Phil Winskill and Sam Ayers who took maximum points in the mens and ladies Championships.
Yesterday's race had looked likely to open up the competition for the Road Championship, a half not fitting into everyone's training/racing plans at this time of year, and so it proved with a few absences amongst both the men and ladies. With neither Phil or Sam having run the first race at Lancaster 3 Bridges, the 2011 Championship has opened right up at the top of the table while the competition for the age categories is also looking keen.
Full Club Championship tables to include Keswick Half will be available shortly. The next race in the 2011 Road Championship is the Lambfoot Loop 10K in Cockermouth on 24th May, before continuing with the Bodyfit 5K (also Cockermouth -13th July), Lancaster 5K Series race 4 (27th August), and Brampton-Carlisle 10 (20th November). Best 4 races from 6 to count.

Keswick AC Club Championships continue this week with Keswick Half and Dockray-Hartside.
This Sunday 1st May the second race of the 2011 Club Road Championship takes place -Keswick Half Marathon (race details here). Eighteen Keswick AC members contested the first race in the Championship at the Lancaster 3 Bridges 10K earlier this month, and an even greater club turnout is expected on Sunday. Entries are available on the day with registration open from 9-11am and the start (a "15 minute walk" from the rugby club) at 11.30am.
Next week (Wednesday 4th May) sees the second race in the 2011 Club Fell Championship with at the minor classic, Dockray-Hartside (details here). The course has 2000' of climb over 6 miles, as well as a fair amount of route choice -once off the track after the first 1/2 mile, much of the route is over little more than sheep trods, with better lines to be found over the open fell in many parts, and a fast final descent off Common Fell. The race starts at 7pm, outside the Royal Hotel in the centre of the village. Parking/registration is at the quarry car park (GR 397211) 500 yards down the road towards Patterdale. Runners are requested not to park at the Royal until after the race.
Both the Road and Fell Championships in 2011 consist of six races, best four results at any distance to count.

Lancaster Bridges 10K, Keswick AC Club 10K Championship -Sun 3rd April
Eighteen yellow and green vests mixed in with the sizeable crowd of 338 this morning, which was a record field for the race. The heavy showers that had earlier fallen on the course had been blown away on a steady breeze, to make for very pleasant conditions for the opening race of the 2011 Club Road Championship.

A large group which included the 2010 Club Road Champion Russell Maddams, Fell Champ Steve Hebblethwaite and Josh Hebson in only his second competitive outing over the disctance, went through the opening mile in 5:15, 32:30 pace. At two miles, former winner of the race Steve Littler (Wesham RR) hit the front and took up the pace, pulling away with James Reed (Altringham & Dist) as the group stretched out behind. However the flight of steps up the embankment to bridge number two requires a considerable effort off race pace, and despite Reed's kick to edge out Littler for the victory, a modest 33:03 took the win today.

Further back, Russ, off the back of high mileage in preparaion for the marathon was strong -coming through to take third in 33:27, ancohoring a delighted first placed Keswick AC men's team with Steve (34:22) and Josh (35:15).

Contrary to an earlier published report it was new Keswick AC signing Neil Cockbain who took maximum points in the V40 Club Championship category with 37:21 from Andrew Slattery (40:35), and Mike Beechey who was involved in a finishing dash with Quentin Merritt, Q pulling out the stops for 43:51 to Mike's 43:56. The result sets Quentin up as the man to beat in the V50 Road Championship as he moves into the category this year.

In the ladies competition, only 18 seconds separated the first three in the battle for early season Road Championship points -2010 V40 Club Road Champion Sue Wilkinson clocking 46:05, just edging out Helen Winskill (46:18) and Annabel Holmes (46:23) for top honours. Her 46:05 gave Wilkinson the prize for 1st FV45, and sets her up as the favourite to defend her FV40 club-title from last year, while Kim Clark (48:45) took top honours in the FV50 category.

Although not a day for pbs, a great start to the 2011 Championships and some excellent racing was enjoyed. Early in the season for many, it will be interesting to see how folk come on as spring moves on into summer with the next fixture in the 2011 Keswick AC Club Road Championship (best 4 races from 6 to count) at the Keswick Half Marathon (1st May), then continuing with the Lambfoot Loop 10K (24th May), Bodyfit 5K (13th July), Lancaster 5K Series race 4 (27th August), and Brampton-Carlisle 10 (20th November). Well done to all those who raced today.

Derwentwater 10 -Sunday 7th November
A wonderfully clear, cool and sunny day for today's Derwentwater 10 was much appreceated by all, such days having been in short supply recently. The near perfect conditions for the 51st edition of the race contrasted starkly with last year's washout. All this created a perfect setting to celebrate the hard work put in over the last 20 years by retiring race organiser Alan Ritchie this year being his last DW10.
The racing too provided drama worthy of the send off deserved by Alan as two records were broken this afternoon -onlookers witnessed a record entry of runners set off from the town's Main St this year, as well as and one of the most exceptional individual performances for some years; several times winner Rebecca Robinson, who has been in great shape after representing GB at the European Athletics Championships marathon in Barcelona this summer, set a new ladies course record of 56:23, the previous record set by Lorna Irving of Edinburgh had stood since 1986.
The Derwentwater 10 has a history of producing a fast mens race too and today was no different with a strong field of local runners, perhaps the best seen for a road race in the county this year, with fast times at the front end of the field the result, James Douglas (Border Harriers) the winner in a time of 51:56. Ken Stuart's record of 49:15 however, which has now stood for an astonishing 24 years -a testament to the kind of form Kenny was in at the time, remains unbroken for another year.

At five miles; James Douglas is chased by Morgan Donnelly (522), previous DW10 winner James Bulman (309), Ricky Lightfoot (822) and Chris Steele (389), hidden is Wesham's Steve Littler. Photo ©sportsunday
The race was also the final race in the Keswick AC club road-championship. Congratulations to deserved winner Russell Maddams (9th) who took the 2010 mens crown today, waiting until around the seven mile marker to make his move to pass defending champion Steve Hebblethwaite (10th). Congratulations also to Gillian Conroy who took the 2010 ladies championship title and will be presented with the championship trophy at the presentation dinner now scheduled for January 29th. The Keswick AC men failed to keep hold of the 'Workington Rotary Club Team Challenge Bowl' which they won at last year's race, despite a strong showing from Russell and Steve, Dave Birch, Rob Wynne and Jamie Luxmoore -the only consolation being the knowledge that we have an athletics competition of such a standard on our doorstep, which is in no small part down to the many hours of hard work put in by Alan Ritchie over the last 20 years. Well done Alan.

Derwentwater 10 is this weeked!
The 51st edition of this classic race takes place this Sunday 7th November.
In 2009 Keswick AC won the coveted 50 year-old team trophy for the first time in 14 years, after strong Border Harriers teams of the late 90's and early part of this decade made the team competition their own.

The race is the final counter in the Keswick AC club road championship this year, with the start as usual on Main St at 12.00 noon and registration down at the school. Further details/entry form here. Online entry is available at www.ukresults.net.
Alan still needs helpers for the race so if you are not running and can assist please e-mail him immediately: waritchie@btinternet.com
If you are going to the race please avoid taking a car. Parking will be difficult because of other events at the school.

Club Fell-Championship race #4: Dale Head, 4.5m/2210' -Sun. 19th September
Rick Cooper at Dale Head -final race in the Keswick AC Club Fell-Championship 2010
It was a damp afternoon at the Borrowdale Shepherds Meet and Show yesterday, making for testing conditions for the final race in the 2010 Keswick AC club championship.
There was some close racing across the age categories. With a number of absentees -Pippa Maddams and Steve Hebblethwaite sealing the top spots in their respective categories last month at Borrowdale, and also several of the ladies whoare in preparation for an attempt at team gold in the British Championship next weekend in South Wales, the door was left open for some good competition for medal positions, and for age category medals too.
Well done to Dave Birch who was first placed Keswick AC runner home in 4th to take 2nd in the 2010 Fell Championship -congratulations Dave. Though it was far from easy run as he was chased home hard by John Nicoll second club counter, and a trio of the club's runners in a close fought battle for V40 honours -Craig Smith, Dave Prosser, and Mark Denham Smith taking it to the wire.

Well done also to Kim Clark, and to Jim Downie who both featured in the prizes yesterday finishing FV50 and MV60 respectively, and in particular Jim who sealed this year's V60 Club Championship in convincing style, with of a clean sweep of category victories in the year -placing 1st MV60 at the Causey Pike, Skiddaw and Dale Head races.

Club fell-championship race #3: Borrowdale Fell Race, 17m/6500' -Sat. 7th August
In less than ideal conditions today, the clag down and going underfoot soft after recent rain, Simon Booth recorded his 12th Borrowdale victory in a time of 2:52:42. A word here should also go to Pippa, who was only five minutes away from the 1997 record in a great 3:19:42 -a strong run given the going underfoot.
Runners gathered in the field opposite the Scafell Hotel following the race to swap tales of woe -of injuries sustained over Scafell and down the corridor route, bravely carried for the remainder of the course, or in unfortunate cases requiring retirement, and of bad lines taken in the low cloud, around Glaramara and Allen Crags, over Scafell Pike, and off Green Gable. It is perhaps worth bearing this in mind when scrutinising the results below.
Today's race was the third of four in this year's club fell-championship. Updated tables will be online soon, going into the final race at Dale Head on September 19th.

Club fell-championship race #2: Skiddaw, 9m/2700' -Sun. 4th July
The Skiddaw race today was a counter in the Keswick AC club fell-championship, and a great turnout of club members toed the start line in Fitz Park this morning, despite a gusting wind and heavy rain.

Photograph: Stu Stoddart/www.flickr.com
Further up on the hill the wind was even stronger and accompanied by driving rain. As the summit marshalls tried to approach the exposed top they were barely able to keep upright, crouched into the wind, and were forced to turn the runners at the gate below the summit plateau -a wise decision. These marshalls should be commended for their efforts today in what were pretty foul conditions.
There was some great competition for club-championship points right down the field and it was great to see strong Keswick AC mens and ladies teams claim the team prizes. Matthew Fraser, turning first at the top will be gutted not to have won the race, and Pippa who dominated the competition in the ladies race may be disappointed not to have run the full course in what would undoubtedly have been a fast time, though conditions today weren't particularly conducive to fast running. Well done all.
Thanks also to the other marshalls on the hill, and at those the start/finish, also the volunteers in the Keswick FC pavilion who looked after 140 dripping runners and refreshed them with tea and cakes.
