New course record at Netherhall 10M -Sun 27th Feb

The first three men home at Sunday's Netherhall 10 Mile, all ran inside Ricky Lightfoot's 2008 course record of 55:40. It was Lightfoot himself who came out on top, only a day after securing victory in the High Cup Nick fell race, to set a new record of 53:38. This time placed him just over a minute clear of the chasing pair of Alan Bowness who recorded 54:43 and Russell Maddams seven seconds later clocking 54:50, both finishing inside the 2008 record.

Keswick AC ladies recorded a comprehensive team victory, Julie Carter winning the ladies race in 66:44 allmost a minute and a half exactly ahead of team mate Sam Ayers who clocked 68:15 for second, with Sarah Bailey (75:49) and Hayley Hodgson (76:54) 7th and 8th.

Loughrigg & Silver Howe Chase 20 Feb 2011

Rather wintry conditions greeted runners yesterday for the pre-season running of this English Championship race due to take place in June.

With plenty of snow underfoot to ensure freezing cold boggy sections and challenging descents I think it was reminiscent of Noon Stone last year....

With only a small field of 59 finishers keeping someone in sight who knew the route was the biggest challenge! Thankfully most folk seemed to manage this and were rewarded for their efforts with soup, flapjack and tea supplied by hosting club Ambleside AC.

A good handful were out in yellow & green and a few prizes were collected in the process. Rob Jebb (Bingley) & Hazel Robinson (Ambleside AC) won the mens and ladies races respectively, both by a clear margin. Keswick results:

9th Jamie Luxmore 1.20.40
26th Richard Scott 1.35.46
27th Helen Winskill 1.38.54
28th Jo Gillyon 1.38.59
40th Neil Elsender 1.46.28
52nd Debbie Thompson 1.58.10
54th Sarah Bailey 2.00.53
57th Chris Clark 2.04.59
58th Kim Clark 2.05.11

Terrific race & superbly organised. And for anyone planning to do it in June it is definitely worth reccying.

English National Cross Country Championships -Sat 20th February

Well done to Charlotte Watson who made her debut for Keswick AC in the Junior Women's race at yesterday's National. Also her first taste of the Nationals, the 19-year old placed a great 47th from a strong field of 111 which was won by 2011 European Cross Country Champion, Charlotte Purdue of the Ashford, Farnham & District club.

Junior Women's results here.

This was followed by a cracking run from Phil Winskill, pulling out a great result in the Senior Men's race off the back of a period of injury-restricted training recently. Phil placed 110th in a field of 1302 competitors. The result goes to show the quality of the field at the National.

Well done to both of the club athletes who put themselves on the line yesterday, they're a great example to the rest of the club and will both gain a lot from the event.

Senior Men's results here.

Matt Barnes has put some great videos of the races up online including this one which shows the start of the 1302-strong senior men's race.

He has also uploaded some good videos of last month's Northern Cross Country Champs at Herrington Park in Sunderland, including this one which shows the two Keswick lads on the day -Steve can be seen tracking Nick Leigh about 2 minutes through the clip and Phil close behind about 2min 35secs in.

Cross Bay Half Marathon

If anybody is looking for something different to do in July the annual Cross Bay Half Marathon across Morecambe Bay takes place on Sunday 24th July. Having done this two years ago I'd recommend anybody to do it at least once. Runnersworld rated it as the country's favourite half marathon last year.

Runners leave their cars at the finish at Hest Bank near Morecambe and get taken round to Flookburgh by coach. From there it is 13.1 miles (a bit shorter when I did it and it varies) back to the finish.

The route is marked across the bay and volunteers from the Inshore Rescue on quad bikes and tracked vehicles make sure you can't get lost. The surface is not what you expect, no mud, not much loose sand, just a firm springy base a bit like an athletics track. There is 100m or so of wading in thigh deep fast flowing water in the channel then back out for the second half.

The scenery out in the middle is fantastic and if you've not been across the bay before it is a fantastic way to see it.

Wansfell, 2.5m/1500' -Saturday 5th Feb

On a damp weekend the Wansfell race -postponed due to the severe weather at Christmas- finally took place. Although over two minutes clear of the second placed runner, Rob Jebb's winning time of 19:50 was almost a minute short of Kenny Stuart's longstanding course record of 18 minutes and 56 seconds for the 2.5m/1500' race, unsurprising given the wet conditions.

Some great Keswick AC runs -Helen Winskill making the podium with a run of 29:04, Jo Gillyon close behind in 29:41, and John Nicoll mixing it at the shrp end of the field clocking 24:32 for 4th place. Well done all.

RESULTS:

1. Rob Jebb (Bingley) 19.50
2. Rhys Findlay-Robinson (Dark Peak) 22.14
3. Tom Jackson (Glossopdale) 24.02

4. John Nicoll -24.32
15. Andrew Slattery -26.38
32. Robert Jones -29.21
41. Peter Bailey -35.37

Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships

Steve & Phil do the business in Sunderland. Results:

http://www.race-results.co.uk/results/2011/naxc11s.htm

Two Keswick runners made the trip east for the 2011 Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships this year being held at Herrington Country Park in Sunderland. This is a prestigious event that always attracts a high calibre field.

The course distance for the senior men measured 12Km and proved a muddy affair for the 488 taking part. The representatives from Keswick AC put in excellent performances finishing high up the field and mixing it with top athletes from prominent Northern clubs. Steve Hebblethwaite admitted he had never run so hard in his life and this was reflected in an excellent 37th placed finish (42:37). Phil Winskill, off the back of some excellent early season training, also placed well finishing 56th (43:48).

The race winner for the senior men was Tom Lancashire from Bolton United Harriers & Ac who clocked a victory time of 38:09. In a strong field with tight packing Lancashire pulled ahead of Steven Vernon (Stockport Harriers) who finished runner-up in 38:22.

In the 8.2Km senior women’s race, Susan Partridge of Leeds City Ac took the honours with a winning time of 30:38 in the field of 190 competitors. Second place went to Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley Harriers & Ac (30:59) and third to Rosie Smith of Durham City Harriers (31:11).

The results from last Saturday's race can be found HERE.

Great turn out from Keswick AC and a course record from Pippa, well done to all who ran.
