Lambfoot 10k

Hi. Is anyone doing this tomorrow (Tueaday) night and want to car share? And does anyone know the route? I can't open the link to the map on the Derwent AC website. I am guessing that the route heads from Cockerouth School out towards Embleton then turns left up past the golf course, and then left again back to the school - or vice versa. Is that right? Q

Glaramara - Sun May 23

62 runners toed the start line for this classic race on what was a gloriously sunny day (bit warm for racing I thought though). 5m / 2100' takes the runners to the summit and back from Glaramara Adventure Centre in Borrowdale. What a superb little race, can't believe I have never done it before. My intention to "keep up" with someone who knew the descent failed and I hopped and skipped down some terrific bouldery bits, interspersed with some fabulous fast running when I did catch sight of some coloured vests ahead. Then a final sprint across some fields and up the road to the finish. This followed swiftly by a much needed dip in the river.

Keswick took a handful of prizes again - well done to everyone there. Not an easy race but certainly worth doing.

Danny Hope (P&B) won the mens and Judy Howells (Wharfedale) the ladies race. Full results to follow.

Llety, 9m/2900', UKCAU Intercounties Fell Running Championship -Saturday 22nd May

The Llety fell race in Denbigshire, North Wales today played host to the UKCAU Intercounties Fell Running Championship 2010. The race saw a stellar field in attendance -in addition to those athletes representing their regions in the intercounties competition the race also hosted the first round of an inaugural event, the McCain UK Mountain Running Challenge.

With the support of sponsor McCain this UKA initiative is "an open four race challenge, with three races required to count in the overall standing (for which prize money is available)...The Mountain Challenge total fund is £6,100 with £3,050 for both Senior Men & Women.". it is anticipated that such prize money could lead to an improvement in standards, and greater opportunity for athletes from the UK domestic scene to gain experience of the kind of competition they could expect to find at on European and World Mountain Running Championship courses. The stacked field today saw the top 35 men all go under the (2009) record for the challenging 9m/2900' course in very warm weather.

Three Keswick AC members raced in Cumbria colours today -Pippa Maddams, Matthew Fraser and following the late withdrawal of Borrowdale man Morgan Donelly, Steve Hebblethwaite recieved a county call up. The competition for the honours in the ladies race was tough -Philippa who dictated the pace for much of the race took second behind GB intenational Vic Wilkinson (1:25:53) in a time of 1:26:53, with Olivia Walwyn settling for 3rd in 1:26:58 -a great performance reflecting the kind of form she is currently in.

After the Cumbria mens team had been tipped to be in the shake up for 1st team this year, the withdrawal of Ricky Lightfoot (Ellenborough/Blackburn Harriers AC) and Morgan Donelly (Borrowdale FR) put the focus on potentially strong Yorkshire and Greater Manchester teams, but some great early season form from a number of athletes in the county meant that Cumbria were still able to enter a compettitive team, including a first county vest for Keswick AC's Matthew Fraser.

picture: Alastair Tye -www.fellrunningpictures.co.uk

Packing their first three counters in the top 20 saw Cumbria take bronze medals ahead of strong teams from Lancashire, and North Wales, a result that was just reward for the their hard effort, over souch a demanding course on a hot day. Well done lads.

Latrigg Fell Race 2010

Press Release:

On a warm and sultry evening 86 runners took on the Latrigg fell race organised by Keswick Athletic Club and sponsored by Ron Hill and Silva. With the race falling within the Keswick Mountain Festival there were a number of unattached runners taking part. For the uninitiated the Latrigg race provides great experience of the grand traditions of Lakeland fell-racing; there are lung-bursting climbs and heart-pounding descents after which the competitors can collapse at the finish in Fitz Park safe in the knowledge they have just experienced one of the area’s unique sports.

As the evening’s temperature rose and the clouds gathered over the fells there was a danger of heavy showers just prior to the race. But the wet weather did not arrive and underfoot conditions were perfect for racing providing ample grip on both the ups and downs.

There were some fine performances from the local Club, with Keswick’s Matt Fraser taking the lead on the steep climb and holding his position to win in a time of 18:08. Matt is in top form and will be representing Cumbria at the Intercounties Fell Championship taking place in North Wales. Hot on the heels of Matt was Club Captain Steve Hebblethwaite who secured second place in a time of 18:31. Put into context this is a mighty effort considering Steve had broken 34 minutes at a 10K in Workington the evening before. Taking third place was another local runner, Borrowdale’s Mike Fanning (18:41), another in excellent form and also the first veteran to finish.

The first lady to finish was Kelly Harrison of Ilkley (24:44) followed closely by Judy Howells of Wharfedale (24:57). There then followed a number of Keswick ladies with new member Helen Winskill (25:16) edging out Club Captain Jo Gillyon (25:21) in a close finish. These two, along with Maureen Bridge, saw the ladies first in the team honours and Maureen collected a second prize as she was first FV60.

Not to be outdone the men also collected the team prize for Keswick with John Nicoll (20:55) joining Matt and Steve high up the field. David Loan, returning to racing after suffering a nasty shoulder injury put in a superb run to finish the first MV50 in a time of 23:20.

Keswick AC: Matt Fraser (18:08), Steve Hebblethwaite (18:31), John Nicoll (20:55), James Luxmoore (21:00), Daniel Barton (21:18), David Loan (23:20), Richard Unwin (24:54), Peter Bailey (25:04), Helen Winskill (25:16), Jo Gillyon (25:21), Jim Downie (25:32), Robert Carter (25:49), Neil Elsender (26:09), David Harrison (27:12), Stuart Ribton (27:48), Gary Hadwin (28:50), Maureen Bridge (29:57), Lesley Malarkey (30:00) and Jenny Butler (33:19).

Well done on all those taking place and all those who helped with the organisation of the race.

Moorclose 10k report

Hi. Just a brief report on the Moorclose 10k. Lots of yellow vests on view reflecting the fact that this was the second race in the club's road race championships. So many good performances that I don't know where to start - and I fear I may get some wrong or miss some out. If I do - my apologies - the official results aren't out yet. Anyway, here goes. In the women's race, Julie Carter won overall, Gill Conroy ran a storming race to win the F35 (thanks for the hurry up, Gill!), Sue Wilkinson won the F45 and Julie, Gill and Debs Edgington won the team prize. In the men's race, meanwhile, Russell Maddams and Steve Hebblethwaite came 2nd and 3rd respectively, Ian took an unbelievable ~3 mins off his PB (now sub 35 mins) to take 6th, Patric scooped the M60 and Russ, Steve and Ian waltzed off with the team prize. Lots of other great performances, as could be seen from all the post-race smiling faces. As well as some inspiring cheerleading from Pippa and Jo - for which, many thanks. Well done all.

Fairfield Horseshoe Sat 15th May

Saturday saw perfect conditions for this classic horseshoe organised by Ambleside AC. The official statistics claim this route to be 9miles / 3000ft but some modern day gadgets seem to disagree putting it closer to 10 miles (and a lot of calories).

The route starts and finishes at Rydal Hall and takes in the summits of Great Rigg, Fairfield and finally Dove Crag before a long, fast descent back to the valley and a god awful track that leads you to an uphill finish.

This race always attracts a strong entry and this year saw almost 400 runners on the start line. A decent handful of who were out in yellow representing Keswick.

No results yet but a quick glimpse at the board on the day revealed a strong win by Rob Jebb (Bingley) with Jane Reedy (Ambleside) winning the ladies race.

Well done to all who ran, hope you enjoyed it!

Latrigg Fell Race -Wednesday 19th May

Just a quick plug for the Latrigg Race which is on Wednesday. As we have 2 main sponsors, Silva and RonHill (through Rathbones) this must be the best prize list ever!!. For instance, both the men's and ladies winners get a RonHill Jacket, plus a quality Silva Head Torch and also a buff. Trail Runner Plus head lamps are about £55 and the jackets £45... not sure about the buffs. In all there are 7 head torches and plenty of other goodies to be won.
Hope to see you there.
Pete.

A new road race next month -the Carlisle Tri 10K, 7.15pm on Wednesday 9th June over "a mixture of quiet country roads which are generally flat or gently undulating.".

There are a number of more 'undulating' 10K courses in the county, but a flatter course such as this with potential for fast times, will be welcomed by many. Further details available via the following links.
